Books to read...

So some of my friends asked me for some reading suggestions so I thought I would share what I have been reading lately! One book that I read after seeing the author had come out with another novel besides The Time Traveler's Wife, is Audrey Neffeneger's Her Fearful Symmetry. It begins with two 20-year-old twins who have inherited a flat in London from their recently-deceased aunt. In her will, she stipulates that the twins must live there for at least a year before deciding what to do about it. The twins' mother and their aunt are also identical twins. This small blurb was enough for me to begin reading it and I just couldn't put it down once I started it. I actually thought it was much better than her first novel.

Another novel that I read over Christmas break, was Katherine Howe's The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane. This is the author's first novel, and again, it was one that I could not put down once opening its pages. The book is also marketed well because when you see the cover that looks like an old notebook from the 1600's, you just want to open it and see what's inside! I highly recommend these two books!

Other authors/books I enjoy:
Tracy Chevalier - all of her books (they are historical fiction!)
Sophie Kinsella - hilarious books! don't be fooled by the Shopoholic movie...these books are good, fun, easy reads!
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen - another interesting historical fiction about being a part of a traveling circus!
To See You Again by Betty Schimmel - a wonderful love story set in the Holocaust...one of my mother's favorites
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
American Bloomsbury by Susan Cheever - biography about the lives and loves of Alcott, Emerson, Fuller, Hawthorne, and Thoreau

Books I want to read:
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford
Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier
Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier

  1. Hey, Jade!

I'm so glad someone else has read Her Fearful Symmetry! I thought it was amazing, and I agree that it was much better than her first novel. Could you believe the ending? I was so surprised when Elspeth took Violet's place!

Rebecca is an amazing novel. I read it a few years ago. However, stay clear of the sequel. The author's daughter wrote it after she died as a sort of commemorative piece, but to me it tragically ruined everything that Rebecca stood for to begin with.

Enjoy your reading! I'm really enjoying the blog thus far. Hope all is well with married life. :)

  2. Thanks for commenting Marissa! I was so excited to see a comment! I know!! I had to go back and make sure I had read it right! I thought it was genius!! Question: did the age difference bother you? and the fact that Elspeth sort of hung around while her former lover was starting a new relationship with her niece? I thought that was sort of odd...it really makes you wonder what you would do in that situation...

Thanks again for commenting! I'm glad you are enjoying...I hope to be consistent in posting...

Married life is awesome!!!! You have a lot to look forward to : )

  3. I did think the age difference was odd... I actually found it more acceptable when reading about Elspeth and Robert than with Robert and Valentina. I think the reason was because Valentina was just so young and wanted to learn about herself without Julia. I guess I was afraid that Robert would overly influence her in the identity search.

I thought it was SUPER weird that Elspeth was hanging around! Even when they were in Robert's flat or in the graveyard I couldn't get Elspeth out of my head. And when he would ask Valentina to leave so he could speak with Elspeth privately while he was starting something with Valentina?? Yeah, very odd! :P But I agree, if I had the chance to be with my lover after death, I don't know that another person would keep me from hanging around. I don't know if I would tell them, though. I hope that I would want them to have happiness and move on, even if that happiness comes from another woman.

You're welcome! I was so excited to see that someone else had heard of the book (much less read it) that I couldn't help myself! :)
