.another unexpected film - 50/50.

I've already mentioned that sometimes I wrongfully judge films that turn out to be great, and oftentimes I wouldn't have given them a chance if not for my husband.  This Friday night found us once again laughing through tears at 50/50 starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen.  Don't get me wrong, I've loved the films Gordon-Levitt has been in (Inception and (500) Days of Summer) but I'm not so much a fan of Rogen's films (Pineapple Express and Super Bad).

However, this one proved to be a lovely film that portrays the realities of illness, friendship, family, and life's extraordinary, but not-so-glamorous moments.  I won't tell you too much other than we thoroughly enjoyed it, and it's well worth watching!

The film is based on the true-life experiences between screenwriter Will Reiser and actor Seth Rogan.  Reiser was diagnosed with cancer when he was just 24 years old; he coped by trying to write a comedy about having cancer, thus began the process of writing and making 50/50.  You can hear more in this interview with Terry Gross of NPR with Reiser and Gordon-Levitt.

Watch it!!

  3. It's so funny, all the movies you say you didn't want to watch are the ones I was dying to see! Like "Crazy Stupid Love," my younger sister and I were dying to watch this movie as soon as we saw the trailer.

But, when I was actually watching the film, I started to be scared it was going to be like any typical indie movie now a days, showcasing a sadly dysfunctional and depressive life with humor but without much meaning or hope. For about the first quarter of the film I felt this way, pretty much until he met the psychologist. I was so glad the movie improved.

One of my favorite parts is how his friend gets rid of his awful (pseudo) girlfriend. Of course, the best part is the end when he comes to realize just how much the people in his life care about him.

Btw, I agree with you about the soundtrack for 500 Days of Summer! But the movie itself really disappointed me. :( The concept was cool though.
