A Hepburn Saturday

Yesterday Scott and I caught some Katharine Hepburn films on TCM.  They were celebrating what would have been her 105th birthday with Bringing Up Baby, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, and Adam's Rib.  We also watched the documentary film she made when she was in her 80s after writing her autobiography All About Me.

I didn't know much about Katharine Hepburn before watching her documentary except that I thought she had an eccentric-sounding voice, and I loved watching her in On Golden Pond when I was a child.  But I learned that she was quite a spitfire (especially in her old age), a very independent woman, and interestingly enough her mother was a suffragette.

I really want to read her autobiography after having watched the documentary that inspired it.  She led a full life, making films and traveling, and the title of her book All About Me, certainly seems to say a lot about her personality.  She admitted about herself that she loved showing off for as long as she could remember, and she lived by this quote:

We ended our Saturday with another film. . . The Avengers at the drive-in, our first drive-in experience as a married couple living in Ohio.  We went several times when we were dating and living back in Virginia, but this was certainly an experience!  They packed in the cars two between each pole and there were two screens showing different movies.  Other than that it was similar to our drive-in at home (minus the sound echoing off the mountain wall).

Our large bag of movie popcorn:
no, we didn't eat it all in one sitting (although that would've been the case without some self-discipline YUM)
